February Faves

Written by:

A few things I've been loving this past month (and a few I've already mentioned before).

* Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Waikiki Strips - all purpose, pigmented, shimmery. It's great on the eyes or as a highlight.

* Bioderma Sesibio and Sébium - in combination, they're great for cleansing and toning.

* Essie Luxeffects Shine of the Times - lovely opalescent flakes.

* Essie Allure - sheer and creamy. A classic colour on the nails.

* Lancôme Rouge in Love Violette Coquette 381B - a true violet colour that gives your lips a unique sheen.

* Rimmel Long-Lasting Finish by Kate No.8 - a dusty mauve shade. One of those my lips but better lipsticks.

* Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronze Universal - adds a beautiful warm glow to the face. Perfect alone or under another bronzer.

* EcoTools Bronzing Brush - dense, soft bristles. I've been using it with Bronze Universal and it applies beautifully.

* Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine - makes my hair sleek and de-frizzed.

 Rimmel No.8 (left) and Lancôme 381B (right)

What are some of your favourites (if you have a post, please link it so that I may see)? xx

NOTD #23: Essie Allure

Written by:

I love the look of stark white nails, but today I wanted a polish with the same coloration without the white-out feel.

Essie Allure is the first colour that came to mind. It's a sheer polish made for french manicures but it works well alone. It does need several coats to reach opacity though.

I paired this beautiful creamy colour with Essie Shine of the Times for a dazzling touch. Shine of the Times is my favourite polish from the Luxeffects collection.

Week in Photos

Written by:

 I have not done a good job at chronicling my week with pictures. I haven't even instagram-ed at all this week and I'm usually good for a random pic or two of whatever goodies I'm munching on.

Alas, this is all I have today. I was considering just skipping this week's Week in Photos but I figured this would make for an easy Sunday read.

I saw a post on Gemsmaquillage's blog where she snapped a few pictures of where she blogged. I thought it was a fun idea, so I copied. Here's where I would typically blog. This is also where I've been spending a majority of my time, albeit not for blogging, lately.

Studying mostly. That's the unfortunate part about having midterms after reading week.

I also indulged in a little treat after a week of studying (like I really needed a reason). I have such a sweet tooth.

Hope you had a great week & are enjoying your weekend! xx

Current Loves

Written by:

A few things I am currently loving. I think I'm going to make this a weekly thing (or -- at the very least -- an every so often thing). Just a few random things I've recently purchased or rediscovered that I have been enjoying lately.

One, my new skincare routine. It starts off with cleansing. I've been using a combination of two cleansers from Bioderma. They are the same but different. The pink bottle is to rid my face of makeup and it does a spectacular job without any irritation or icky residue. The green bottle is to regulate my skin's oiliness. It's also a cleanser but I find that it makes for a great toner!

I have also been lapping in the luxury of the Shiseido Facial Cotton pads. Now, I know what you're thinking, why pay $9 for cotton when you can get it for a tenth of that elsewhere? Answer, quality. Seriously. It's totally worth it. It's not abrasive and it doesn't leave any fuzzies on your skin or lashes. Plus these don't waste your product! The fibers in the Shiseido cotton don't soak up toner/cleansers like drugstore cotton pads do, which means you won't need as much product to get the job done.

Two, my hair routine. I adore the original Moroccanoil treatment but I found that it really weighed my hair down. I've also learned that it contains a lot of silicones in it. The silicones make your hair look great but it does nothing for the actual health of damaged hair... but that's a whole other can of worms.

Anyway, I opted for something a little lighter and easier to apply. The Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine is wonderful! It's exactly what I was looking for. It's a finishing spray that tames my frizz without the heaviness. It's a spray so it doesn't leave any residue on your hands.

I have also rediscovered my love for boar bristle brushes. I went through a phase of using just boar brushes, then just wide tooth plastic combs, then not combing my hair at all, and now back to boar brushes. Life was easier when I rarely combed/brushed my hair but with fringe, it's just not feasible.

Boar bristles are actually easier on your hair than plastic brushes, believe it or not. They redistribute your hair's natural oils and it boosts shine. I still use a wide tooth comb to detangle my wet hair, but when it comes to styling, I turn to my boar bristle brush. I got it from my local BSO.. I think it was around $20.

Three, bow belts. I think they are so cute and they are so fun! They are great for cinching tops, sweaters, dresses or just wearing around your belt hoops as a statement belt. I purchased these from the Gap a few months ago, I doubt they're still available in store.

Four,  my new Hello Kitty phone case! I feel like I've gone through so many phone cases since I got this iPhone almost a year ago. Usually it's because I get tired of one style and need a change. This time around, I actually needed a new case because my old one had just had enough. I dropped it one too many times.

I adore this new case though. I got it from a vendor at the Pacific Mall in Markham for $13. I'm not sure if that was a good deal or not.. it was just the cheapest price out of the three stalls I visited. It came in three or four different colours but I chose red as sort of an homage to my previous case.

That's it for now.

What are some of the things you've been loving lately?

February 2012 Topbox

Written by:

Hooray for another box of goodies!

I've been receiving these boxes for almost a year now. You'd think the novelty would've worn off by now.. but it hasn't. At least for me. I'm still excited to check my mailbox every month.

This is the February edition of Topbox and I was quite happy with it overall. There were five products in this

* C.Booth Derma Care Collagen Elastin Restorative Hand & Nail Treatment - This hand creme is supposed to visibly diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I'm actually really excited about this product because we all treat our faces to nourishing moisturizers, why not our hands? They age just as much as the face. You know what they say, you can tell a person's age by their neck or the hands. Plus, this was a full-size product worth $16.

* LillyPilly Kakadu Plum Hand & Body Creme - I enjoyed the last LillyPilly product I received, so I imagine I will enjoy this one also. I liked that there were two packets because one would probably not be enough to form an opinion on it.

* Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat - I have had my eye on this for a while now. For the longest time, I thought this was a concealer, but it's not. It's actually a complexion highlighter. I am glad that YSL has expanded their colour range for this product. When I first heard about it, they only had four colours -- none of which worked with my skin tone.

* Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils - I haven't tried this mascara yet but I have heard many flattering things. I am always wary about paying more than $20 for a mascara when I could just go out and pick up my go-to Voluminous for under $10. Former disappointments include but are not limited to DiorShow, Lancôme Hypnose, and Benefit They're Real. Maybe it's my short, stubby lashes... I have learned that pricier isn't always better. Nonetheless, I'm happy to try this.

* Pari Beauty Eye Shadow No.72 - This was customized for me based on my style and eye colour. It's a beautiful turquoise blue that looks bright and fresh. Unfortunately, it's just not a colour that I would typically wear or be drawn to. I'm more of a neutral person. This is also a full-size produce and it is worth $11.

Overall, I was quite happy with this month's box. I always love getting mascara samples. Often at makeup counters, you can test their mascara but the brushes that you use to test them isn't the same one that comes with the mascara. Let's face it, the brush is half the find. Mascara is one of those products that either works or it doesn't -- the brush and the formula have to work seamlessly together.

This is one of the two boxes I'm subscribed to (the other one being Glossy). If you received a Glymm or a Luxe box this month, please share your post because I'd love to enviously read it :).

TAG - Seven Deadly Sins of Beauty

Written by:

I think this might be the first tag video I have ever filmed -- unless What's in my Bag? videos count.

I love watching tag videos and the Seven Deadly Sins one has been popping up in my subscription box a lot lately so I decided to participate.

Here are the questions:

1* Greed: What is your most inexpensive beauty product? What is your most expensive beauty product?

2* Wrath: What beauty product do you have a love/hate relationship with? What product has been the hardest to get?

3* Gluttony: What are your most delicious beauty products?

4* Sloth: What beauty product do you neglect due to laziness?

5* Pride: What beauty product gives you the most self-confidence?

6* Lust: What attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex?

* My Question for Lust: Which product/brand do you find has the most physically attractive packaging?

7* Envy: What product would you most like to receive as a gift?

I would love to read your answers!

P.S., what are some of your favourite tag videos to watch?

Week in Photos

Written by:

* I ate a lot of goodies this past week. Especially cupcakes (the ones from Sobeys). They're delicious. Does anyone else eat cupcakes this way (tearing off the bottom to make a cupcake sandwich)?

* I also spent the week clearing & cleaning my dressing table. I ended up tossing a few products that had expired and a few empty products.

Hope you all had a great week! And if you're lucky enough to live in a province that celebrates Family Day then yay! :)

NOTD #22: Essie Neo Whimsical

Written by:

This is the polish I received in my first GLOSSYBOX. I put it on almost immediately and I love the colour. It's not too pink and there's a hint of lilac.

It is a little finicky to apply though -- this is only two coats but it would've looked more even with three.

FOTD: Lancome Rouge in Love

Written by:

I didn't have intentions of purchasing anything from the new Rouge in Love collection but while I was at the Lancôme counter, I couldn't resist. Violette Coquette is a beautiful colour. It's quickly becoming one of my favourite lipsticks of the moment.

It actually looks a little different on the lips than in the tube. I also like the formulation -- it's lightweight and moisturizing. I may pick up a couple more colours.

I adore the packaging. It feels so luxe.

Have you tried these new lipsticks?

February GLOSSYBOX - Canadian Edition

Written by:

Back in December, GLOSSYBOX contacted me about a complimentary box to celebrate the launch of the service in Canada.

Now it's finally here and available for purchase via GLOSSYBOX Canada.

GLOSSYBOX, for those of you who don't know or haven't read my previous post, is the newest subscription service to come to Canada. It costs $15 (including tax) and delivers five (or six) deluxe beauty samples to your door.

Now onto this month's box...

I love the stylish packaging of the GLOSSYBOX and the beautiful pastel box. The box itself is a little bigger than the other subscription boxes (though I don't have direct comparisons yet).

Inside the box was five products plus a bonus one.

* Elizabeth Grant Moisturizing Stick - a moisturizing balm that's perfect for those dry winter lips. This is a full-size product and it retails for $12.

* Oscar de la Renta Live in Love Body Lotion - smells just like the Eau de Parfum, a sensual floral scent. The lotion is nice on the skin but the scent is a little strong for my taste.

* Ahava Mineral Hand Cream - a lovely dead sea mineral hand creme. It smells great and it feels lovely on the hands.

* Essie Neo Whimsical - a beautiful polish! It's a lovely pastel pink/purple hue that looks lovely on the nails. This is also another full-size product and it retails for around $10 (depending where you purchase it).

* Elizabeth Arden Prevage Night Cream - a night cream that is supposed to help fight visible effects of environmental aging to enhance skin's moisture. I've tried a Prevage eye cream in the past but I did not like it. Hopefully this night cream shows better results.

* Bonus Beauty So Clean Sanitizing Wipes and Mist - I love the idea of this product. It's so important to sanitize your makeup occasionally because it could build up bacteria. I typically use rubbing alcohol but Beauty So Clean offers you another alternative. You can use the wipes for lipsticks or eyeliners --- I love how they are individually packaged so that you can take it with you on the go. The mist can be used on powder-based or cream-based products.

I was quite happy with this month's box... I don't know if I love it but I am excited about a few of the products (especially the nail polish).

What do you think? Will you be signing up (if you haven't already)?

P.S., I will be doing a comparison on the different services shortly :).

NOTD #21: butterLONDON Snog + Glitter Hearts

Written by:

butterLONDON Snog is described as a "bright, happy, hot pink." In other words, the perfect Valentine's day polish. Even the name is appropriately cute.

I love this colour of pink and I like that it doesn't have any shimmer. It's just a vibrant colour... and the description is true to form -- it does make me happy.

I used the same technique as this post to make the glitter hearts (which is the polish butterLONDON Tart with a Heart -- which could also be considered a good Valentine's day polish name).

Recent Purchases

Written by:

I think I am going to put myself on a spending hiatus.

After March 3rd, that is. I'm going to a makeup event at Holt's for the release of the Knightsbridge collection from Chanel. I have been eyeing the Brompton Road blush for a couple weeks now -- though I'm not sure how well it will work on my tanner complexion (also the price makes me a little squeamish).

Anyway, here are a few things I picked up from my wishlist:

* Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream No.23 (Natural Beige)

I purchased this from Beauty Credit at New Century Place in Markham (398 Ferrier St). Thank you, Sam, for recommending!

I am really enjoying this BB Cream (much more than any of the Western one's I've tried). It looks really light when I first apply it. Then after a few minutes, it just blends perfectly with my skin. It offers minimal coverage... But it's enough considering it's not a foundation.

* Chanel Blush Horizon (Limited Edition)

Adore! I am such a sucker for coral anything. To me, this blush is quite unique. On my paler (and I use the term pale loosely) days, it adds a bit of colour to my cheeks. On the other hand, when I'm a bit tanner, it's more of a pretty highlight and it adds a really nice luminosity to the cheeks.

* Bioderma Sebium H2O Cleanser

My combination/oily skin is singing praises for this cleanser. I've only been using it for the last few days but I can already see an improvement in my skin's oiliness. I.E., my skin feels normal! Not too dry and not too slick.

* Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel (Link!)

It adds such a beautiful glow to my face. The consistency is my favourite thing about this product: not quite a liquid but not a powder. It has such a velvety smooth finish.

* Chanel Miroir Double Facettes (Compact Mirror) (Link!)

It's just as beautiful as I remember, plus it's quite handy. I've already used it several times -- the downfalls of sporting a bold lip, I suppose. At least now I have a luxe compact to do it in.

Left to right: all colours swirled together, just the pink half, and just the peach half. Apologies for the rushed swatches :).

What are some of your recent buys?

NOTD #20: Essie Bangle Jangle

Written by:

Essie's 2012 Winter Collection. I fought every notion in me to buy it because I put myself on a nail polish ban... but low and behold, here she is.

Amazingly enough, I wasn't the one to purchase it. It was actually a "gift" from my mum. I use the word gift loosely because it wasn't wrapped and it wasn't for any occasion -- my mum just saw it and thought of me. She knows me so well.

The mini set contains four 5mL bottles (from left to right): Bangle Jangle, Size Matters, Cocktail Bling, and Bobbing for Baubles.

I seriously think that these bottles are the perfect size -- at least for non-HG polishes.

Bangle Jangle is the first one I tried and I adore the purple/smokey grey hue. It works well as an everyday colour but it's still fun.

 On another note.. I'm going to re-film my January favourites video today. Fingers crossed that it works out :).

Hope you're all having a great Friday! This week went by really fast.

NOTD #19: Broken Hearted

Written by:

In the spirit of the "holiday," here are some Valentine's Day nails that are really easy to do. Plus, they're perfect if you're for or against this Hallmark day.

Here's what you'll need:
* A base colour
* A shatter/crackle polish
* Tape

Here's what I used:
* Essie Fiji
* Essie Fiesta
* China Glaze Crackle Glaze
* Base Coat (butterLondon) + Top Coat (Seche Vite)
* Tape (I used Painter's tape -- the cheap kind so it isn't too sticky)

Paint your nails with the base colour you chose. I used Essie Fiesta and Essie Fiji as an accent nail.

Cut out a heart shape in the tape. I chose painter's tape because it's not as sticky as regular tape,
which makes it more manageable. Even then... this was my third try haha.

After your nails are completely dry, stick the tape on your nail (make sure it's secure)
and apply a layer of shatter polish.

Finish it off with your favourite top coat.

What are you wearing on your nails today?

This post should aptly be named Shopping List but I like the whimsical feel of the title Wishlist. These are a few products I'm lusting right now.

* NARS Gaiety - This is a new blush from their Spring Collection. I already own Desire and Mata Hari so I'm debating whether I actually need it but I definitely want it.

* Chanel Compact Mirror - I've been meaning to repurchase this ever since I misplaced mine (and few other things) in an unfortunate lost luggage incident of '06. I am drawn to this purely for the packaging, obviously.

* Prada Candy - Adore this fragrance.

* Missha BB Cream - I've tried a couple Western BB creams but I wasn't really happy with them. So I've got my eye on a few Asian BB creams.

* Chanel Blush Horizon - A limited edition blush from the Spring Collection. This blush is beautiful. Expensive but beautiful. Hopefully it's still available at my local Chanel counter. Fingers crossed.

While I'm trying not to purchase anymore nail polishes, here are some of the colours I've been eyeing. Starting at 12 o'clock...

* butterLONDON Trout Pout
* Essie A Crewed Interest
* Orly Jealous, Much?
* Essie To Buy or Not to Buy
* butterLONDON Slapper
* Orly Prelude to a Kiss
* butterLONDON - Knackered
* Essie Navigate Her

What's on your wishlist?
