Summer Beauty Meltdowns

Written by:

The first official day of summer is just around the corner. The warm weather calls for easy makeup, easy hairstyles, and a pared down wardrobe. Summer is one of my favourite seasons (granted there's only four), but it also has a dark side... Summer heat, humidity, chlorine from the pool, sun rays, and drying central air conditioning.

With summer approaching it makes sense to make a few changes to your beauty regimen. Certain types of makeup hold up better in the summer heat, so, here's your summer checklist:

  • Oil-free foundation, tinted moisturizer with SPF, or oil-absorbing makeup
  • Blotting paper, mattifying lotion, or oil-free powder
  • Bronzers with undertones of gold or copper to give the face a healthy glow
  • Powder blush (to help absorb oil) or cream blush (for drier skin)
  • Waterproof mascara
  • Lip gloss or lipstick in sheerer shades
  • Conditioning shampoo and conditioner (better yet, shampoo less often and letting your hair air dry)
  • Sunscreen
  • Primer (great if you find that moisturizer slides off your face)

Here are a few product suggestions to cope with common summer beauty meltdowns:

Here's to enjoying the joys of summer and looking fabulous! x

May 2012 Topbox

Written by:

My May Topbox arrived today, a little later than usual. Short story: my box was mailed to my old address but Topbox was kind enough to resend it to my new address and throw in an extra sample.

1. Cover FX Matte Foundation Primer

This is a great "anti-shine" primer. It is supposed to reduce lines and pores while preventing and healing acne blemishes. The mattifying effect is great for the summer season. It will help keep the shine at bay.

2. Deborah Lippmann Whatever Lola Wants

This is the second Lippmann polish I have received in a Topbox. These polishes are beautiful, from the formulation to the colour selection. This particular polish was created with Kelly Ripa. It's a beautiful shimmery pink. It's quite sheer though.

3. Orlane Anagenèse 25+

This first time-fighting eye cream is supposed to diminish fine lines puffiness, and dark circles. It's also supposed to leave your eyes looking smoothed, luminous, and lastingly younger-looking.

4. Expressions Bronzing Powder Brush

This is a great brush. It  reminds me a lot of the bronzing brush from EcoTools. I'm not certain whether the hairs are real or synthetic, but I do know that they feel very soft on the skin. I also like how dense the hairs are. I am definitely going to be using this brush in the future, probably with my Chanel Bronze Universal.

5. Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser

This was the bonus product I received in my box. Though I'm not a fan of Philosophy's skincare products, their cleansers and bath products are lovely. I actually really enjoy this particular cleanser because it leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean. I don't use it all the time because I find it too drying sometimes, but it really feels like it deep cleans my pores.

I really enjoyed this month's box, it was full of great products. Until next time, hope you're having a wonderful day! x

Coral Polka Dots

Written by:

I'm bringing my obsession with polka dots into my clothing choices. This dress is a beautiful summer coral that I found at Forever21. I probably wear it more than appropriate but I love it. I adore the colour and the style. Button down, collared, and A-line. I discovered a long time ago that A-line dresses flatter me the most so it's usually the style I flutter to.

The dress does provide an annoying gap between two buttons at the bust, which when left unattended, provides a sneak peek of your modesty. Fashion tape or a safety pin fixes that.

My immediate thought when I first saw this dress was that it's definitely something I'd find in the closet of a Stepford wife. Nonetheless, I adore it. It's a versatile piece, throw a cardigan over it and you could even wear it to work (well, depending on the dress code).

Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Gloss - Hoola

Written by:

I've been seeing these new Benefit glosses pop up in stores and remembered that I already had one (courtesy of Loose Button).

The colour I received was in Hoola, which also happens to be my favourite matte bronzer. The glosses, in case the packaging and name aren't obvious, are inspired by the box powders.

The gloss itself is nice. The formula feels great on the lips. It's non-sticky and easy to apply. It comes in a tube with a simple slanted plastic applicator. Unlike some glosses, these have good pigmentation. It also has a tropical scent but no taste.

The colour is great, although it's really nothing like the box powder. Hoola the lip gloss is a nude colour with gold shimmer, whereas Hoola the bronzer is a soft, matte bronze shade (no shimmer).

Have you tried these new glosses? They come in as many shades as there are box powders.

It has been a really quick week! The weather here has been fabulous though. I've spent a lot of time on the beach (though the water is still too cold for any swimming) and on various restaurant patios. Hope you've all had a wonderful week!

NOTD #38: Rose Gold Ombre

Written by:

Here's what I'm wearing on my nails today. A fun rose gold gradient. The gradient/ombré effect is a trend that I'm loving.

I used a combination of polishes to get this look. Orly Rage as a base and a mixture of Deborah Lippman Some Enchanted Evening and butterLONDON Rosie Lee on the tip. It's actually a stunning combination, the pictures don't do it justice.

I want to try more ombré designs. Let me know what some of your favourite colour combinations are! x

Nautical Errands

Written by:

I found this dress in my closet with the tags still attached. Granted it was a fairly recent purchase. It's only a few months old, but H&M seems to come out with this style often. It's a simple dress with a nautical vibe and a drop waist. I love the casual look. I remember purchasing a size up because this style demands a loose fit. This dress is very comfy. Easy to wear and perfect for running errands.

I have gotten a lot of questions about my Neverfull PM. I guess there aren't a lot of people raving about this bag because many people usually purchase the bigger sizes. So here's a little video review, hope it helps if you're looking to purchase one! x

Little Black Dress

Written by:

Part two of my wedding outfit of the night. I went with a little black dress for the reception. It was a little cool so I paired it with a blazer. Blazers are one of my favourite pieces of clothing. It's so versatile and it's a great layering piece.

The venue was pretty. This was taken a few yards away from where everyone was gathering for some drinks and appetizers before the banquet opened.

I was standing on a pedestal and I'm sure a few guests were wondering what I was up to.

Happy Sunday!! x
