Glossybox | September 2012

Written by:

It's that time again... September's Glossybox. has made its way to my doorstep.

I've been underwhelmed by the products I've received in my boxes. I think it was because of the high expectations I had from seeing the UK boxes (I mean, they had a Burberry lipstick once). While I enjoyed most of the products I have received, it's only recently [read: this month] that I've been wow-ed by Glossybox

This Glossybox is the first one I've paid for with my own money. The very first box I received was a promotional box, and the other boxes were paid using points I received from referrals. Before, I was happy with any product that I could find use for since it was basically free, but this time around, my expectations were high and I'm relieved Glossybox didn't disappoint.

Dove Cleartone
Aside from this being a great travel companion (because it's so compact) and smelling great, I'm indifferent towards this product. It's deodorant. Nothing special in my eyes. Besides, I'm quite loyal to Kiehl's Superbly Efficient Deoderant. I’ve been using it for years and I love it.

Wella Mirror Polish Shine Spray
A mist that is supposed to leave your hair with a gorgeous shimmer. It reminds me a lot of Morrocanoil's shine spray. Same idea. Not a fan of the scent, though. I found it to be a little heavy on my hair. Might have been because I tried it on second day hair. I'll probably give it another go.

B. Kamins Lip Balm & Maple Body Lotion
This is a Canadian brand. I've purchased a couple of their products before, like their sunscreen and cleanser, and I enjoyed using them. The lip balm is nice on the lips and the body lotion is nice on the skin (I was hoping it would smell like maple fudge, but no such luck). Other than that, I didn't find anything too remarkable about them.

NYX Cosmetics: The Crimson Amulet Collection
The feature product is this full-size makeup palette from NYX. It was such a surprise to receive this in the box. Highly unexpected. I've only tried a couple products from the brand in my lifetime, so I was quite excited to receive this. It's funny because I thought, based on the outer box, it was a DVD of Dark Shadows.

The palette reminds me a little of Urban Decay Book of Shadows, except this NYX palette is much better. Not only does it come with 24 great shadows, but it also has 5 blush shades, 1 highlight, 4 lip colours, an eye primer, and a mascara.

So many different products. Great pigmentation on the shadows, blushes, and highlight. Sturdy packaging, large mirror, and even three looks to you can re-create. This probably deserves a whole post dedicated to swatches.

Overall, I thought the box was great.  Well, if I'm honest, the NYX palette really made the box. I consider all the other products just bonus since I'm not sure how much use I will get out of them.

Did you receive a September Glossybox? x

Check out some other Glossybox unboxings:
  • Petite Pear Style (You'll love her blog, she always has amazing pictures & great videos!)

If you have a post, please let me now so I can link it within my post. I think it's so much fun to see what others received / think of the products :).

Geek Chic in my New Glasses

Written by:

So I received free glasses from Firmoo a couple weeks ago... and so can you!

Have you heard of this company before? I never had until they contacted me. I browsed their website and they have a nice selection for great prices. Now, they don't carry designer brand names, but they offer good quality products.

After window shopping their site, I knew exactly which pair I wanted to get.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a new pair of glasses in the popular Wayfarer shape. I was planning on getting a pair of Ray-Bans, but then I saw a very similar style on Firmoo. I really their website because they have lots of pictures (and not just the regular stock photos), plus all the measurements for each pair of frames.

The glasses I chose are the Unisex Full Frame Plastic Eyeglasses. Opening the box, they came wrapped in bubble wrap with a cloth, within a sturdy case, inside a drawstring pouch. Basically, they were well protected during the shipping process.

The frames are exactly what I was expecting based on the pictures from Firmoo's website.

I received the frames fairly quickly. I was impressed, considering they have prescription lenses (mind you, my eyesight isn't terrible, only -1.25 in both eyes).

The quality is good. They're plastic and fairly light. The hinges on the frames feel a little stiff, but overall, the frames feel sturdy.

I've been using them for over a week now and they've held up great, despite my lack of proper eyewear care. Since I only need to wear glasses for distance (i.e., driving, low lighting situations), I typically just throw my glasses in my purse sans case. So far I haven't incurred any scratches on the lens (or even the frames).

So, while I got mine for free free**, you can also get a pair for free! Firmoo has this program where you can get your first pair of eyewear from them for free. All you have to do is pay for shipping, which to Canada is $12.95 (I checked).

Visit their website to take advantage if this awesome deal! Also, let me know which frames you like x

PS, yeah, I'm bringing back the fringe! :)

** This item was sent to me for consideration :).

Spending Some Glymm Points

Written by:

Did you know Glymm points expired? I didn't! They have a short lifespan, so if you have some saved up, I'd spend, spend, spend before you lose them! I already lost quite a few points because I was a slowpoke.

I placed this order in the beginning of August and it just arrived the other day. After I had placed the order, I waited two weeks and still hadn't received a shipping notification. I emailed and turns out that the product I originally ordered, the Caudalie Beauty Elixir, was on back order. So, I exchanged the Beauty Elixir for some Beauty Blenders. Another few weeks went by before I sent another email asking about the status of my order. I didn't receive a reply but a couple days after that, I finally received a shipping notification.

After that whole ordeal, here's what was in the box.

The Ahava Deadsea Water Mineral Hand Cream is a product I've received a sample of in the past and I loved it! Moisturizing, non-greasy, and great scent.

The Beauty Blender is something I've never tried before. I've never been really interested in purchasing it, but since I had some points to subsidize the purchase, I decided to give it a go. I've used it a couple times so far and I'm enjoying it.

I also got this little moisturizer sample. Not something I'm too interested it, but it was good for one use.

Lastly, a little bonus product. An apology gift for the long wait. I thought it was a nice touch. A full sized bottle of hand cream from Princepessa. I already own one of these and I love it. It smells incredible and very moisturizing.

Have you spent any points at the Glymm Boutique? x

Shoppers Beauty Box

Written by:

If you're in Canada, you may know that Shoppers Drugmart has been having a bunch of little promos to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Last weekend they were having a bonus optimum point redemption event, so while I wasn't planning on getting anything, I popped into a store to have a look around.

Low and behold, I did end up picking up a couple things. Only two. Really! :)

My skin has been feeling a little dry lately. I blame it on September and the impending Winter season. So, I picked up the Clarins Santal Face Treatment Oil. I've heard many good things about this product and figured I'd give it a shot. I've been using it nightly for a few days now, and while I haven't seen any concrete changes in my skin, I'm enjoying it so far.

Next is Stella McCartney's fragrance in Stella. I got the smallest bottle (30ml / 1 fl. oz). I really like the scent, but not enough to commit to a 100ml bottle. Fragrances are something you have to go out and test / smell for yourself, but here's a copy-paste of the notes:

"A beautiful fragrance which blends fraikle rose and sensuous amber.
With top notes of rose, peony and mandarin essence; middle notes of rose absolute and base notes of amber."

All I know is that it smells great on and it lasts quite a while.

Also, for spending over $75, I received, what I affectionately call, the Shoppers Beauty Box. The name stems from the fact that this is basically a box full of samples and a couple full-sized products. Within the 26 products, there was a mixture of fragrance, skincare, and makeup. Mostly little packets, but it was free, so no complaints here.

There was definitely a product for everyone. Lots of BB creams and skincare samples. I really like the two lip glosses (which are the only full-sized products), the colours are great and the quality is good.

Any recent purchases lately? I'd love to know! x

Hanging on to Summer

Written by:

It's September but I'm still clinging to the last threads of Summer. Fall may be my favourite season for fashion, but I will miss those warm Summer nights.

Denim jackets are a great transition piece from Summer to Fall. They're superb to layer with! I chose a pair of blush / pink khakis, but if you're brave, you can layer denim on denim. I actually just bought this jacket the other day. I can't believe I didn't have one in my closet already.

Do you own a denim jacket? x

Weekend in Photos

Written by:

Happy Monday, lovelies!

Here's a few random pictures from my adventurous weekend.

The boyfriend and I went to a BMW event, where we got to test out the new 3 series with xDrive, as well as competitors (like the Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class, Acura, and Infiniti). We got to drive them around a "track" with obstacles (i.e., sand and tight corners), to get a feel for how well xDrive performs against other car makers. It was pretty fun.

We got some ice cream from Dutch Dreams. It was my first time going, and it did not disappoint. It was a little messy to eat, but it was delicious! The flavour pictured is Gold Medal Ribbon.

We also saw the Great Wall of China!

Get it? ;)

We walked by the Ritz and saw a bunch of people lined infront of the hotel. It's a common sight during Tiff. We asked a girl who she was waiting for and she said no one in particular. Just any celebrity staying there.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and a great start to the week! x

Glossybox | August 2012

Written by:

Whenever I receive a Glossybox in the mail, I'm always surprised. Probably because it always comes much later than my other boxes so I kind of forget about it. Nonetheless, it's usually a pleasant surprise.

August's box came packed with goodies. A nice range products. This may be my favourite box so far because of the different products I received.

Befine Fine Food Skin Care

I have never heard of this brand before. The packaging and name intrigued me. At first I thought it was food, but upon closer inspection realized it was for the skin. Inside the box were five packets:
  • A night cream - with cocoa, millet, and rice bran. It's supposed to boost circulation and support collagen growth.
  • A pore refining treatment scrub - with  coconut, jojoba, and citrus. It's supposed to reduce your pores and even out your skin tone.
  • An exfoliating cleanser - with brown sugar, sweet almond, and oats. It's supposed to scrub, heal, and hydrate your skin.
  • A gentle cleanser - with sugar, mint, oats, and rice. If you're not feeling an exfoliator, you'll enjoy this more.
  • A warming clay mask - with cardamom, arnica, and pomegranate. It's supposed to help purify your skin.
I really enjoyed reading the ingredients on these packets. The packaging is neat. I also like that the products are all natural (i.e., paraben free, vegetarian proteins, and allergen free fragrance). Can't wait to try these. They probably smell good enough to eat.

Sebastian Potion 9 Lite

Another Sebastian hair product. I'm definitely going to be giving this away. While it sounds wonderful to use -- it's a styling hair spray that will condition, restore, and enhance while enabling manageable styling -- I will pass. I don't want to risk another breakout. I've even given away my beloved Sebastian hairspray. I am now paranoid. Two months later, my skin is finally getting back to what it was.

Biore Make-Up Removing Towelettes

While I try to avoid using make-up wipes, sometimes I just can't help it. They're easy to use and super convenient. I like these ones because they're oil free. There's 10 in this little pack, great for traveling or just bringing around with you. I tried one the other night and it feels nice on the skin. Sometimes wipes can be a little abrasive, but I didn't find that with these.

Layla Mascara

This is probably one of the more unique products I've received in a beauty box. It's a glitter mascara top coat. It has the weirdest wand I've ever seen. Usually mascara wands have bristles or little pointy rubber hairs. This wand has neither. Instead, it just has ridges / grooves to dispense the glitter. I haven't used it yet, and I can't really think of a time in the near future where it would be appropriate, but it's definitely a fun idea.

Kryolan for Glossybox

A Glossybox lipstick, how fun! The colour I received was in Glossy Pink. It's pretty pinky rose shade. It has a nice creamy formula. I actually really like the colour. It looks quite natural on... a my lips but better kind of shade. The lipstick is hydrating and surprisingly long-lasting.

Bonus Products

There were some extra products in the August box. One was a mystery gift card to Trend Trunk, which I've never heard of before but it's sort of like a marketplace for clothes, etc. The mystery about this card is that you have to go online to Trend Trunk's website to find out what the value is. It could be anything between $5 and $250 (though I'm sure the odds in getting the higher denominations are slim).

The second product is an Elastoplast SOS Blister. It's basically like a bandaid for blisters. I rarely get blisters but I'll be sure to keep this on hand, just in case. The little pamphlet also came with a "World Shoe Compass." This is so you'll know what your shoe size is wherever your travels may lead you.

A comment I usually make at this point is that the brands I received aren't really the luxury deluxe samples that was initially promised. However, if you check out Glossybox's new website, they've revamped their taglines to say exciting deluxe beauty samples. And it's true, this box was pretty exciting and I'm overall pleased with the products.

Did you receive a Glossybox for August? Mine was V5, let's compare. x

Loose Button | Fall 2012 Luxe Box

Written by:

During the summer, Loose Button announced that they were transforming their monthly subscription service to a seasonal one. I was all for the change. I already get a couple monthly beauty boxes, so I welcomed the idea of receiving a quarterly box handpicked for each season.

The first seasonal box has been shipped and arrives on doorsteps this week. I received mine yesterday and couldn’t wait to share it with you!

Let's start with the packaging.

The new Luxe Box has exceptional packaging. The box itself has gone through many transformations since their very first launch. Now, it is a sturdy rectangular cream box with the a gold logo on the lid.

The envelope which houses the product info card is sealed with a gold monogrammed emblem. Also, there was no tissue paper in sight; instead, a white silk-esque fabric was wrapped around the products. Everything about this packaging felt luxe.

On to the products…

Philosophy Hope in a Jar

A little tube of the cult favourite moisturizer. I’ve tried / purchased this before and I didn’t love it. It’s a decent moisturizer but it’s not for me. The tube is good for a few uses. It’s also a good size to travel with.

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire (ie., the little black dress)

I love when fragrance samples come in mini versions of the full-size. It makes for a great collector’s piece once you’ve used it up. Guerlain is a wonderful makeup brand. Known to me for their stunning packaging and terracotta bronzers. I had no idea they were coming out with a fragrance.

I wasn’t impressed after my first whiff. I’m not a fragrance aficionado, but I do know what I like, and at first it wasn’t this. After trying it on my skin, though, I fell in like and it is growing on me every minute.

Goldwell Lagoon Jam

I have no use for gel. At least, that was my first thought when I picked this out of my box. Then after thinking about it, a product like this would be perfect for sporting a sleek top knot or other hair syles. I tried a little bit on my hair earlier and it works well. I also like that it doesn’t leave my fingers / hands feeling sticky. It’s very manageable in the hair.

Lancome Defincils

I can’t get enough of my Lancome Hypnose mascara right now, so I was excited to see this. Defincils is supposed to be amazing for the lashes and I cannot wait to try it. The brush seems fairly average, but if the formula is similar to the Hypnose line, I will surely love it.

China Glaze Exotic Encounter

Who doesn’t love getting nail polish? I certainly do. This polish comes with China Glaze’s Fall Collection On Safari. The colour I received was in Exotic Encounters. It’s a beautiful dusty teal shade. A great transition colour for Fall. It's a lovely creme polish and it applies like a dream.

Calvin Klein

There was a little sample body lotion and fragrance set in the box as well. This fragrance came in a little spray tube. I discovered the other day that I have a lot of those, too many really. I’m trying to use them up, slowly but surely. Anyway, the scent is classic Calvin Klein. The body lotion isn’t too strong on me, so I can definitely see myself using it.

Loose Button Exfoliating Pad

This was the last product in the Fall Luxe box. The pad felt quite abrasive when I swiped it across my skin right out of the box. It didn’t feel quite so harsh when I dampened it with water though. This exfoliating pad is great for sloughing off those dead skin cells. Definitely wouldn’t recommend it for the face / neck, but it’s great for the body.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this box. Like I said, I adore the packaging. The products were great, nothing I’ve received in a prior beauty box (at least that I can remember). These new boxes have a price tag of $25 (every three months). Do I think it’s worth it? I’m leaning towards yes. I’ll wait until my next box to make a definitive answer.

What did you think of the Fall Luxe Box? x
