Glossybox | August 2012

Written by:

Whenever I receive a Glossybox in the mail, I'm always surprised. Probably because it always comes much later than my other boxes so I kind of forget about it. Nonetheless, it's usually a pleasant surprise.

August's box came packed with goodies. A nice range products. This may be my favourite box so far because of the different products I received.

Befine Fine Food Skin Care

I have never heard of this brand before. The packaging and name intrigued me. At first I thought it was food, but upon closer inspection realized it was for the skin. Inside the box were five packets:
  • A night cream - with cocoa, millet, and rice bran. It's supposed to boost circulation and support collagen growth.
  • A pore refining treatment scrub - with  coconut, jojoba, and citrus. It's supposed to reduce your pores and even out your skin tone.
  • An exfoliating cleanser - with brown sugar, sweet almond, and oats. It's supposed to scrub, heal, and hydrate your skin.
  • A gentle cleanser - with sugar, mint, oats, and rice. If you're not feeling an exfoliator, you'll enjoy this more.
  • A warming clay mask - with cardamom, arnica, and pomegranate. It's supposed to help purify your skin.
I really enjoyed reading the ingredients on these packets. The packaging is neat. I also like that the products are all natural (i.e., paraben free, vegetarian proteins, and allergen free fragrance). Can't wait to try these. They probably smell good enough to eat.

Sebastian Potion 9 Lite

Another Sebastian hair product. I'm definitely going to be giving this away. While it sounds wonderful to use -- it's a styling hair spray that will condition, restore, and enhance while enabling manageable styling -- I will pass. I don't want to risk another breakout. I've even given away my beloved Sebastian hairspray. I am now paranoid. Two months later, my skin is finally getting back to what it was.

Biore Make-Up Removing Towelettes

While I try to avoid using make-up wipes, sometimes I just can't help it. They're easy to use and super convenient. I like these ones because they're oil free. There's 10 in this little pack, great for traveling or just bringing around with you. I tried one the other night and it feels nice on the skin. Sometimes wipes can be a little abrasive, but I didn't find that with these.

Layla Mascara

This is probably one of the more unique products I've received in a beauty box. It's a glitter mascara top coat. It has the weirdest wand I've ever seen. Usually mascara wands have bristles or little pointy rubber hairs. This wand has neither. Instead, it just has ridges / grooves to dispense the glitter. I haven't used it yet, and I can't really think of a time in the near future where it would be appropriate, but it's definitely a fun idea.

Kryolan for Glossybox

A Glossybox lipstick, how fun! The colour I received was in Glossy Pink. It's pretty pinky rose shade. It has a nice creamy formula. I actually really like the colour. It looks quite natural on... a my lips but better kind of shade. The lipstick is hydrating and surprisingly long-lasting.

Bonus Products

There were some extra products in the August box. One was a mystery gift card to Trend Trunk, which I've never heard of before but it's sort of like a marketplace for clothes, etc. The mystery about this card is that you have to go online to Trend Trunk's website to find out what the value is. It could be anything between $5 and $250 (though I'm sure the odds in getting the higher denominations are slim).

The second product is an Elastoplast SOS Blister. It's basically like a bandaid for blisters. I rarely get blisters but I'll be sure to keep this on hand, just in case. The little pamphlet also came with a "World Shoe Compass." This is so you'll know what your shoe size is wherever your travels may lead you.

A comment I usually make at this point is that the brands I received aren't really the luxury deluxe samples that was initially promised. However, if you check out Glossybox's new website, they've revamped their taglines to say exciting deluxe beauty samples. And it's true, this box was pretty exciting and I'm overall pleased with the products.

Did you receive a Glossybox for August? Mine was V5, let's compare. x

Loose Button | Fall 2012 Luxe Box

Written by:

During the summer, Loose Button announced that they were transforming their monthly subscription service to a seasonal one. I was all for the change. I already get a couple monthly beauty boxes, so I welcomed the idea of receiving a quarterly box handpicked for each season.

The first seasonal box has been shipped and arrives on doorsteps this week. I received mine yesterday and couldn’t wait to share it with you!

Let's start with the packaging.

The new Luxe Box has exceptional packaging. The box itself has gone through many transformations since their very first launch. Now, it is a sturdy rectangular cream box with the a gold logo on the lid.

The envelope which houses the product info card is sealed with a gold monogrammed emblem. Also, there was no tissue paper in sight; instead, a white silk-esque fabric was wrapped around the products. Everything about this packaging felt luxe.

On to the products…

Philosophy Hope in a Jar

A little tube of the cult favourite moisturizer. I’ve tried / purchased this before and I didn’t love it. It’s a decent moisturizer but it’s not for me. The tube is good for a few uses. It’s also a good size to travel with.

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire (ie., the little black dress)

I love when fragrance samples come in mini versions of the full-size. It makes for a great collector’s piece once you’ve used it up. Guerlain is a wonderful makeup brand. Known to me for their stunning packaging and terracotta bronzers. I had no idea they were coming out with a fragrance.

I wasn’t impressed after my first whiff. I’m not a fragrance aficionado, but I do know what I like, and at first it wasn’t this. After trying it on my skin, though, I fell in like and it is growing on me every minute.

Goldwell Lagoon Jam

I have no use for gel. At least, that was my first thought when I picked this out of my box. Then after thinking about it, a product like this would be perfect for sporting a sleek top knot or other hair syles. I tried a little bit on my hair earlier and it works well. I also like that it doesn’t leave my fingers / hands feeling sticky. It’s very manageable in the hair.

Lancome Defincils

I can’t get enough of my Lancome Hypnose mascara right now, so I was excited to see this. Defincils is supposed to be amazing for the lashes and I cannot wait to try it. The brush seems fairly average, but if the formula is similar to the Hypnose line, I will surely love it.

China Glaze Exotic Encounter

Who doesn’t love getting nail polish? I certainly do. This polish comes with China Glaze’s Fall Collection On Safari. The colour I received was in Exotic Encounters. It’s a beautiful dusty teal shade. A great transition colour for Fall. It's a lovely creme polish and it applies like a dream.

Calvin Klein

There was a little sample body lotion and fragrance set in the box as well. This fragrance came in a little spray tube. I discovered the other day that I have a lot of those, too many really. I’m trying to use them up, slowly but surely. Anyway, the scent is classic Calvin Klein. The body lotion isn’t too strong on me, so I can definitely see myself using it.

Loose Button Exfoliating Pad

This was the last product in the Fall Luxe box. The pad felt quite abrasive when I swiped it across my skin right out of the box. It didn’t feel quite so harsh when I dampened it with water though. This exfoliating pad is great for sloughing off those dead skin cells. Definitely wouldn’t recommend it for the face / neck, but it’s great for the body.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this box. Like I said, I adore the packaging. The products were great, nothing I’ve received in a prior beauty box (at least that I can remember). These new boxes have a price tag of $25 (every three months). Do I think it’s worth it? I’m leaning towards yes. I’ll wait until my next box to make a definitive answer.

What did you think of the Fall Luxe Box? x

White Polka Dots After Labour Day

Written by:

If you're not supposed to wear white after labour day, what's the rule for white polka dots?

Obviously, I have not gotten over my obsession with polka dots. I spotted this dress at Forever21 a few weeks ago and loved it. It's a button-up shirt dress, similar to my first foray into polka dots, but a more neutral palette. The dress has a retro feel to it and the pockets are a nice touch.

The dress isn't lined, but the material is solid. I still wear my favourite slip from Free People under it though. I just love finding excuses to wear it because it's super comfortable.

I also wanted to showcase my new sunnies. I love Ray-Bans, but I've always been an Aviator girl. However, when I tried the New Wayfarer, I had to have them in my life. I always shied away from the Original Wayfarers because I found the shape unflattering on me, but the new version is the solution!

They're from SmartBuyGlasses (no affiliation). I was a little iffy about the site because I had never heard anyone use it before but I took a chance. Plus, they had great prices, free shipping, and no tax / duty. How could I say no? They shipped via FedEx and arrived the very next day from HK. Very pleased with them.

Anyway, I hope you had a wonderful weekend! x

Chanel | Rouge Coco Shine - Monte Carlo

Written by:

Wow, so blogging every day in August was a fail. I was doing so well, too. It was due to the usual reasons: work has kept me quite busy, and I just haven't found the perfect blogging time

Anyway, it wasn't a complete loss. I have lots of posts in back log that I will be able to shower you with in September :).

To start off, I have a lipstick love to share. It's another Chanel Rouge Coco Shine. I really do love these. Monte Carlo is a beautiful pinkish red. It looked a little more reddish pink in the tube but on the lips, it leans more pink. It also has a a subtle shimmer.

I really enjoy the lightweight texture of these lipsticks. Most of them are pigmented enough to either cover up your lip colour, or naturally enhance your lips. Once again, lasting power could be better. I can only get about three or four hours of wear but it does leave a little stain.

Let me know what you think x

Ps, how was your summer? Can you believe it's September?! My mind is still blown.
